The new Coursera study reveals a narrow gender gap in online education in India

Corsera, one of the world’s largest online learning platforms, released a new study that examines the effects of pandemic disease on skills and learning trends in women.

The Women and Skills Report compares previous epidemic enrollment and performance statistics with trends seen on the Corsera platform since the onset of the epidemic until June 2021. Women in India are learning online at a higher rate than the pre-epidemic, which represents 44% of new learners in 2021, up from 37% in 2019, according to Coursera’s figures. With 4.8 million registered female learners, India has the second highest number of registered female learners in the world.

The World Economic Forum’s Global Gender Gap Report 2021 suggests that the epidemic has unequally affected women in India, with the country ranked 28th compared to 2020. %, Inadequate representation of women in technology and leadership, and lagging behind in male literacy. India’s insights into the Women and Skills Report include:

  • Women are turning to online education at a higher rate than the pre-epidemic. Korsera has 4.8 million registered female apprentices in India, ranking second among all the countries in the world. In 2020, 44% of the newly registered Indian learners were women and this growth continued till 2021. Overall, 38% of the total learners in India today are women, up from 24% in 2016. Middle-aged Indian women studying at Coursera are four years younger than the global average age of 27 years.
  • More women are enrolling in STEM courses and entry-level professional certifications. In India, the total enrollment of women from 2019 increased from 26% to 36% in 2021. For STEM courses, the gender gap decreased from 23% enrollment of women in 2019 to 32% in 2021. Level Professional Certificates have gone up from 22% in 2019 to 30% in 2021. Obtained from industry leaders such as Google, IBM and Facebook, these certificates are designed to prepare students without a college degree or lack of technology experience for a higher grade. -Demand digital jobs.
  • Top skills among Indian women represent a balanced investment in human and digital skills. There are four STEM skills, such as computer programming (2M enrollment from Indian women), machine learning (1.9M), probability and statistics (1.8M), and theoretical computer science (1.6M). The top 10 skills of the past year also include critical business and personal development skills, such as communication (1.5M), leadership and management (1.1M) and entrepreneurship (1M). Top courses teach job-related skills, including programming for everyone from the University of Michigan (starting with Python), machine learning from Stanford University, English for career development from the University of Pennsylvania, and financial markets from Yale University.
  • Product innovation helps increase women’s participation in online learning. Mobile is an incredibly powerful tool for ensuring flexibility in learning. In India, 2% of female learners (compared to 4% globally globally) enter the course on mobile devices, which is the highest in the world. Other factors that led to an increase in enrollment from women include adding practice quizzes before challenging assessments, listing the most common mistakes for peer-reviewed assignments, and distributing assessments throughout the course.
