Online assessment of higher education has become easier with Moodle on AWS

Digital transformation in higher education is revolutionizing the way industry works and the way it is distributed across many aspects. With classrooms, assessments and operations taking place online, every important component of the higher education institution has gone digital.

Research EDUCAUSE on Digital Transformation in Higher Education shows that today 13% of colleges and universities are involved in Dx (digital transformation), 32% are developing Dx strategies and another 38% of higher education institutions are exploring Dx. The remaining 17% of organizations will be up and running soon.

However, going digital comes with its own challenges. Shift from offline to online calls for new and improved teaching and assessment measures.

One of the major challenges facing higher education in order to bring about digital transformation is to develop a sound, consistent assessment plan. An efficient online assessment plan examines its purpose, validity, reliability and value while fulfilling the main objective of benefit to students and teachers.

Online tools can meet the challenges by helping higher education institutions to adopt appropriate measures and develop holistic assessment plans.

Moodle is one such tool that changed the game for Graphic Era University.

Moodle, an open-source learning management system, offers power-packed utilities to make learning seamlessly online. Due to its flexibility and incomparable user-friendliness, it has become popular in the educational community. Moodle allows teachers to quickly access a wide range of solutions without being locked in by license costs.

Moodle deployment in the cloud instead of traditional on-premises or private hosting has resulted in enterprise level scaling, load management, flexibility etc. Setup takes the offer one step further. Cloud deployment further adds benefits like staging, versioning, A / B testing, geo-locking. And a sea of tracking, improved up-time, and less hardware dependence, among other benefits.

Graphic Era University invented a flexible and cost-effective solution for deploying Moodle on the AWS cloud. While working with EdTech provider Ballistic Learning, the university implemented Moodle as an interim solution. Within days, the university launched online exams for a community of about 18,000 students. The university conducted a virtual assessment for students living in remote areas of the country, even at an altitude of 7,000 meters, despite poor internet connectivity. Effective use of AWS Cloud’s caching and load handling capabilities, Moodle enables students to successfully pass their exams on their mobile devices with internet speeds as low as 100Kbps.
