Egyptian startup OTO courses raise $ 400k to enhance distance learning

OTO Courses, an Egypt-based EdTech startup that offers online English language courses to individuals and businesses, has raised $ 400k in cash and in-kind services from corporate venture capital firm EdVentures to enhance distance learning practices in Egypt and the Arab world.

With the new investment, the company plans to further develop its platform and expand its services to include a large segment of users, especially secondary and high school students by providing educational programs in various fields and subjects.

Founded in 2015 by Ahmed Badr and Tareq Noor Al-Din, OTO’s online learning platform gives learners the flexibility to choose the session dates that suit them, giving them the opportunity to interact directly with lecturers. OTO is one-to-one (tuition). All courses on its platform come with dedicated hours of one-to-one live tuition with one instructor.

The startup aims to bridge the gap between traditional education and what the market needs by providing distance education services through digital platforms.

Speaking about the company, OTO co-founder and CEO Tareq Noor Al-Din said,

“We, at OTO, want to be a leading platform for online education in Egypt and the Middle East, and for providing high-quality services and benefiting everyone.”

Since its launch, OTO has provided 350,000 hours online to over 15,000 learners. There are over 150 teachers / lecturers on the company’s platform.

Elaborating on the company, OTO CCO Ahmed Badr said,

“The company aspires to play a significant role in educating children and youth in the Arab world through the latest EdTech provision. We will continue to provide our users with high-quality services at the most reasonable rates so that all segments can benefit from our platform.”

OTO had earlier launched DardshEnglish, a platform for booking one-to-one voice practice sessions with English speakers.

Commenting on the investment, Dalia Ibrahim, founder and CEO of Adventures, said:

In June 2020, OTO collected an undisclosed amount of money from AUC Angels and Changelabs in a bridge round. Prior to that, the company had rolled out seed rounds from HIMangl and EdVentures in 2018.
